Reimagining the future of data visualization
An exploration of how we might power prosperity amongst Digital Natives with data visualization
Role: Design Technologist Intern
Focus: Research, UI/UX, Prototyping (lead)
Timeline: May 2017 — August 2017
CONTEXT
About Intuit Futures
This team is intended to be a central catalyst for design driven creativity, combining design thinking and design craft to accelerate the future at Intuit, through research, prototypes, visualizations, and storytelling.
Challenge
How might we reimagine data visualization for Digital Natives to help them prosper?
PROCESS
Initial Questions
In order to unpack the prompt in a more approachable manner, we broke it down into three simpler questions:
What is data visualization?
Who are Digital Natives and what are they like?
What does it mean to prosper?
Understanding our Target Users
We reached out to our network around the globe and conducted user interviews with those who fell within the categorization of Digital Natives which include a combination of both Millennials and Gen Z’s.
Quote: “Being prosperous means being rich in a currency that is meaningful to me — and it doesn’t have to be money.”
Insights
Digital Natives appreciate the role of technology in their daily lives but are nostalgic about their childhood as well.
Digital Natives are excited about new technologies but are more interested in how they would supplement their current lifestyles.
Digital Natives distinguish apps into different categories.
a. Classics (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram)
b. Necessities (Venmo, Uber, Spotify)
c. Experiments (Games, Trending Apps)
Design Principles
In order to better guide the direction of our exploratory project, we established a strict list of design principles based on our research insights that would help drive us towards solving real problems.
Brainstorming Concepts
We created statements in the form of “How might we” grounded on our design principles to explore various concept ideas that would help Digital Natives prosper.
FINAL CONCEPTS
Project GoalFish — Reimagining financial goal setting and tracking
Setting aside money for spending goals doesn’t need to be stressful. We gamified this experience to make it playful, accurate, and organized so that our users can enjoy the process of being financially responsible.
Project Uplift — Reimagining personal financial budgeting
What if you could see how your monthly spending was going with one quick glance at your phone? The hot air balloon and its position in the sky represents a user's monthly spending-to-income ratio. The more that is spent, the heavier the balloon becomes as it floats closer to the ground and glows a warning pink color.

Interactive Prototypes
At the end of our internship, we had the opportunity to share out our work with designers, engineers, and leadership across the organization. We had many employees from QuickBooks and Mint express interest in our explorations and discussed how they might apply some of our concepts to their user experiences.
NEXT STEPS
User testing and further iterations
Although this was exploratory work around data visualization, I would have loved to user tested these concepts with real digital natives to collect feedback, iterate, and refine the ideas.
